In March 2006, the Partnership for Clear Health Communication (PCHC) conducted our first membership survey to learn about our members' health literacy programs and initiatives, as well as find out what programs, services and information they would like us to offer. Nearly half of our members (49%) responded to this survey. We want to thank these members for their helpful input and insights. PCHC will use these findings to enhance our offerings and develop programs designed to meet our members' needs.
Seventy-four percent (74%) of survey participants want Question & Answer (Q&A) articles from experts on health literacy topics.
Our first Q&A is now online! Helen Osborne, M.Ed., OTR/L, Health Literacy Consulting, offers readers terrific information and advice on using metaphors to help communicate clear health messages. Read the Q&A >>.
Over half of the survey participants (55%) want PCHC to offer technical assistance services.
We are launching a new program to help our members with their written materials for their patients, clients or communities. Our materials review service will help members revise their current materials so they are easier to understand. Look for additional information in our upcoming PCHC e-Newsletter, or send us an e-mail with questions.
When asked if the survey participants would support PCHC efforts to educate policymakers about the importance of national legislation to improve health literacy, 76% said yes!
In April, PCHC launched our first educational effort aimed at policymakers. We published the Capitol Hill Insider, a quarterly e-Newsletter designed for health legislative aids and staffers. With additional resources and support from corporations, PCHC plans to expand our efforts by hosting at least one Congressional education session in 2006. We also want to work with others to generate interest in Congress for a National Health Literacy Act. If you are interested in joining this effort, let us know by sending us an e-mail.
In addition to the above, many described their programs and offered comments and ideas for new initiatives that will help build awareness and advance solution for low health literacy. To request a copy of the complete membership survey summary, please send us an e-mail.
Again, thank you to our members who responded to our first annual survey. We appreciate your advice and comments and will continue to use your helpful responses to guide our programs and meet our members' needs.
